Free Nutrition Clinics Help Fight Obesity in Bahrain.

While most of the obesity studies we hear about focus on the United States of America and other western countries, the rise of unhealthy and processed foods and the waistbands associated with them have been affecting most countries around the world. Bahrain is currently facing an obesity epidemic like the US is with 33% of adults overweight and 36% of those adult are obese. To give some context, the worldwide average rate for obesity was 12% in 2008, the last year it was checked. Since the government realized that it had to take action in 2008, there have been a number of nutrition that have been built to help people change their lifestyles so that they could be healthier and stay that way in the long run. They work in tandem with the governments new obesity guidelines that emphasize that a change in lifestyle is the only way to keep the weight off.

While the clinics are themselves a great resource, where the program really shines is in the support system that patients get when they leave the safe confounds of the clinic and have to fend for themselves. All of the clinics are in local health centers so they are easily accessible and they focus heavily on one-to-one consultations, focus groups, and presentations about being aware of what, how, and why you’re eating. Getting to the root of why people overeat is an incredibly important part of the weight-loss attempt, many use food as a crutch. The numbers also seem to support the process. Almost 75% of patients involved in the 5-year program have lost weight and continue to do so.
