Investors are Returning to Greece’s Real Estate Market.

Of all of the recessions that hit various countries around the world, there’s no denying that the country who felt it the hardest was Greece. In the short span of a few years, the country went from being seen as a model of economic integration and free-market capitalism to an economic pariah that threatened to bring down the euro (due to said un-controlled free-market capitalism). Even when other countries such as Spain and Portugal began to attract investors again it seems as though Greece was going to be ignored forever. However it seems as though investors are finally waking up and realizing that, with global economic forces slowly turning again, Greece is an investment opportunity and has some of the most prime real estate in the world.

Over the past year and a half, investors have bought over $1.58 billion worth of properties from both the government as well as private sellers and companies. While those are the deals that have already been made, there are far more in the works as firms from countries ranging from the UK to Turkey to the United States are competing to buy as much of the undervalued land as possible before fortunes reverse. As the Greek economy slowly makes a turnaround into growth, the prices are staying low for now. However they will rise quickly and when they do the Greek economy will be on far firmer footing than it has been in a long time.

Ice Bucket Challenge Brings in Over $41 Million.

While there have been many right negative things said about the ice bucket challenge (the most important pointing out how it was in incredible luxury to dump fresh, clean, and drinkable water all over one’s head when there are so many in desperate need), there is one positive that nothing will be able to take away; over $41 million has been raised to help search for a cure for ALS. While most of the people who took part in the challenge obviously did it because they wanted the social media glory, they did spread awareness and over 739,000 new people have donated money. Mind you, none of these people will be repeated donors, but the money is still there and will still be put to use searching for a cure.

Last year the A.L.S. Association raised $19.4 million in one year. That means that the Ice Bucket Challenge actually doubled the number of donations and that will most likely continue to increase as the fad begins to die out. More than that, the challenge brought awareness to a disease that literally half of Americans knew nothing about. With over 30,000 people currently affected by ALS and with more being diagnosed every day (it’s a genetic disease), the outcome for the challenge could never have been better. That being said, people only donate to the causes that they see as currently “sexy” and so it’s a shame that no other disease will see this sort of outpouring of financial support unless they come with something eye-grabbing too.

Free Nutrition Clinics Help Fight Obesity in Bahrain.

While most of the obesity studies we hear about focus on the United States of America and other western countries, the rise of unhealthy and processed foods and the waistbands associated with them have been affecting most countries around the world. Bahrain is currently facing an obesity epidemic like the US is with 33% of adults overweight and 36% of those adult are obese. To give some context, the worldwide average rate for obesity was 12% in 2008, the last year it was checked. Since the government realized that it had to take action in 2008, there have been a number of nutrition that have been built to help people change their lifestyles so that they could be healthier and stay that way in the long run. They work in tandem with the governments new obesity guidelines that emphasize that a change in lifestyle is the only way to keep the weight off.

While the clinics are themselves a great resource, where the program really shines is in the support system that patients get when they leave the safe confounds of the clinic and have to fend for themselves. All of the clinics are in local health centers so they are easily accessible and they focus heavily on one-to-one consultations, focus groups, and presentations about being aware of what, how, and why you’re eating. Getting to the root of why people overeat is an incredibly important part of the weight-loss attempt, many use food as a crutch. The numbers also seem to support the process. Almost 75% of patients involved in the 5-year program have lost weight and continue to do so.

A non-profit is providing suits for the jobless.

There’s no denying that first impressions are incredibly important and frequently make or break certain situations, especially professional ones. One of the major hurdles that the jobless face is being able to afford the type of clothes that make the first impression they want to make on potential employers. However there is one non-profit that is working hard to make sure that the homeless and jobless are equipped for interviews in clothes that impress. The program Suited for Work is run by FEGS and works to increase the confidence of interviewees by providing them with top of the line designer suits and training so that they can walk into their interviews with their heads held high and with their best foot forward.

The economy has drastically changed over the past 10-15 years and these changes have left blue collar workers with no college degrees facing uncertain futures. With wages falling and jobs moving, many men have found themselves homeless and jobless and they don’t even know how to begin getting their life back. While there are many non-profits that offer this sort of service for jobless and homeless women, Suited for Work is one of the few that focuses on men. With their focus on dressing jobseekers well and improving their confidence and self-worth, this non-profit is truly making a difference in the lives of many.
